Is this really art? I believe so, it shows dedication and belief beyond the normal boundries of your average artists work. I like the way how the clip is shown, as there are no pauses and a continous loop of face after face, after face. You notice slight and drastic changes to his facial features during the clip, this helps to expose the viewer to how his life was unfolding throghout the 6 years of producing this.

IDAT203 - Project proposal

Yesterday I went to an art exhibition as part of the practical session for the IDAT203 module. We had a guest speaker tellling us about the art we were viewing. There was many forms of art on display, which were displayed in many different styles. My favourite piece was a collection of large test tubes, which had a projecter directly above it playing a scene which looked something like a group of cells zoomed in. The clip displayed from the projecter was on a continous loop, yet it was hard to tell where the beggining and end was due to the complexity of video. Even taking into account of the type of room this piece of art was displayed, a very dark place with no light apart from the clip of cells. This gave the piece of work a stronger feeling and helped demonstrate what the artist wanted us to feel when we saw the work.

And now for my project preposal...

After discussing my initial ideas of selected artists work, I came up with an idea of what I would like to produce. My initial plan is to go out and take pictures of peoples faces, approximately 20 would be good. With these pictures I intend to somehow blend two faces together, to gain one face with the attributes of the two faces merged. This could be done using 'Macromedia Flash' using a merge tool. The only problem with this idea is that it will be hard to get the scale perfect for each face to fit into one another, however using flash the images could be edited and a defualt size for each picture could be obtained. I intend to produce an interactive art piece, I like the idea of how we interact with the world around us and can change things to suit our preference. To add viewer interactivity I am able to add a selection tool using flash, wich would allow the viewer to select which faces they would like to combine. There are so many combinations that are possible which I believe makes this idea very interesting.

Further research

Today I have been spending time working with my business group to produce an idealistic time scale. We have outlined several major dates which require specific parts of our website (http://www.clarity3D.com) to be completed by.

Setting specific job roles within the business will help to keep track of our prepared timeline for project completion. We have been refining the job status for the group, as displayed below;

- Jack: Project manager, design ideas/preliminary sketches
- Tom: 3D/Flash designer
- Will: 3D/Flash designer, programmer
- Chris: Researcher, programmer
- Simon: Design ideas/preliminary sketches

I am in the process of drawing up a final timeline for our group. which will contain deadlines for specific areas of the project, relative the role for each person in our group. A mission statement is also in the process of being developed. I thought the best way to make this was to take each members perspective. In which case I have asked every member to produce a paragraph or two which will explain what we as 'Clarity3D' will provide for potential clients. This will enable a joint understanding for everymember what the big picture is within our business. Once everyone has produced their personal idea of what our mission statement should be, I will go through and combine ideas to produce a final mission statement, ofwhich will be approved by each member.

Tomorrow I plan to make a start on some preliminary sketches and design ideas for basic interface of our website.

IDAT203 Artist research

Artist research:

Yesterday and after lectures today I decided to make a start going through two different multimedia arts books. I picked them both up from the university library a couple of days ago, however have been busy with other work to make headway from day one.

The two books I loaned out are entitled:

- 'Six years: The dematerialization of the art object from 1966 to 1972'
- 'Frank Popper: Art of the electronic age'

So far from reading through both of these books, I have come across two artists who’s work has caught my interest;

- Jean Pierre Yvarai, reference: page 84 - 'Frank Popper: Art of the electronic age'.
This artist’s work uses portrait pictures and edits them using his creative flair with use of computer media tools. With reference to the book named above there is an example of his work on page 84. Here you can see the Mona Lisa portrait has been edited using geometrical structure of patterns. His work also shows adding part of another portrait with a similar scale to create a polymorphication of two different portraits.

I believe this idea of creativity is very inspiring, it has a simple concept yet the final piece speaks for itself, bursting with life and showing the viewer far more than a picture. It offers the viewers eyes to wonder around the piece of art, as the portraits used are exceptionally well known, the concept of editing and changing the visual appearance of these images holds a bold statement, and depth to each piece of work.

- Tom De Witt, reference: page 86 - 'Frank Popper: Art of the electronic age'.
This artist’s work uses images which are manipulated by the movement of a person or object. Aesthetics and ergonomics is a major part of Tom De Witt’s work as his body movement within the picture changes the sequence of light movement, as shown on page 87. It looks as though he has slowed down the shutter speed on his camera lens. This would be interesting to experiment with.

I like the idea of experimenting with ergonomics, allowing the artists body to interact with movement within a picture. The idea of slowing down shutter speed of a camera to achieve an effect is a great idea. Working with layers of this a very original piece could be achieved. I like this idea and look forward to further experiments in this area.

I have researched artists before as part of assignments; however this is my first time touching upon digital art. I have found this type of work very different, yet containing its own unique qualities which makes each piece stand out in is own way.

First blog entry, Today i have been going through my modules, I have created a calander displaying all of the important course dates, hand in dates etc...
